Only when a lab report for that exact glove model backs the code. Certificates are available on request, so ask which documents cover the model you plan to sell.
EN 388 (current version EN 388:2016+A1:2018) is the European mechanical-risk standard. Its code reads, left to right:
| Position | Test | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Abrasion | 1–4 |
| 2 | Coupe cut | 1–5, or X |
| 3 | Tear | 1–4 |
| 4 | Puncture | 1–4 |
| 5 | ISO 13997 (TDM) cut | A–F |
| 6 (optional) | Impact, EN 13594-based test at 5 J | P if passed |
"X" means not tested or not applicable. In the US, ANSI/ISEA 105-2024 covers cut (A1–A9), abrasion and puncture. ISEA asks makers not to write "ANSI Cut" or "ANSI 105", and says the ANSI mark must not imply certification. Impact sits in a separate standard, ANSI/ISEA 138-2019, with Levels 1–3.
General EU glove requirements now sit in EN ISO 21420:2020+A1:2024, harmonised from June 16, 2026. EN 420 stops giving presumption of conformity on December 16, 2027. More detail: glove safety standards explained and certifications.

Usually, yes. The European Commission's PPE guidance says gloves designed to protect the hand are Category II by default. Category II gloves need an EU type-examination by a notified body (Module B) plus Module C, and type-examination certificates last at most five years.

There are exceptions. Gloves against superficial mechanical action, such as gardening or dirty work, are Category I. Some welders' gloves are Category III (electrical risk, or 100 °C and above). Gloves for private use against weather or cold are not PPE. Check the category for each model with your notified body before you sell in the EU.
