What should I check first when choosing MMA gloves?
Check the use first, because it sets the weight. Then measure your hand, check the fit and pick the material:
| Check | What to look for | Where to read more |
|---|---|---|
| Use | Competition, hybrid training or sparring | Next section |
| Weight | About 4 oz for competition, 6–8 oz for training and sparring | "What weight MMA gloves are allowed?" below |
| Size | Brand size chart, read against your hand measurement | "What size MMA gloves do I need?" below |
| Fit | Snug over wraps, not crushing at the knuckles | "How should MMA gloves fit?" below |
| Material | Leather or synthetic (PU) | "Leather or PU?" below |
What is the difference between competition, hybrid and sparring MMA gloves?
The difference is mainly padding and weight. Budo Online says more padding means more protection for you and your partner, so sparring gloves are the heaviest:
| Glove type | Typical weight | What it is for (Budo Online) |
|---|---|---|
| Competition | 4–4.5 oz | "Used in professional and amateur MMA bouts" |
| Hybrid / training | 6–7 oz | A middle ground, with "more padding than competition gloves but lighter than dedicated sparring gloves" |
| Sparring | 7–8 oz | Sparring that should "still allow grappling and clinch work" |
Fairtex says 7 or 8 oz "is often smarter" for weekly technical sparring. It says heavier gloves can reduce cuts and "soften the feeling of impact," but do not make sparring safe on their own.
Can I spar in 4 oz gloves? The guides we found point to heavier gloves for sparring. Fairtex and Budo Online both point to 7–8 oz for sparring, and Budo Online says MMA gloves are not suited to heavy sparring in the way boxing gloves are.

What weight MMA gloves are allowed in competition?
Every rule set we found starts at 4 oz. Some also set a top limit, so the rules of your commission decide:
| Rule set | Glove weight | Other glove rules |
|---|---|---|
| Association of Boxing Commissions, Unified Rules report (2009) | "At least 4 ounces"; the report says the wording should not cap gloves at 6 oz, as XXXL gloves can weigh more | Commission-approved |
| New Mexico, 15.6.20.13 | Not less than 4 oz and not more than 8 oz | Professional quality, commission-approved, must fit the fighter's hands |
| Ontario, Canada, MMA rules Part I, 8.3–8.5 (Version 1.0, effective January 1, 2025) | "no less than 4 ounces and no more than 8 ounces", with an allowance of up to 5% over or under | Open palm, open fingers, open thumb and "velcro closure system"; new gloves in all bouts |
In Ontario, the promoter supplies the gloves and both fighters wear the same type (rule 8.1). A fighter who brings their own gloves must also bring a matching pair for the opponent (rule 8.2). The ABC text is a 2009 committee report, not the current rule book. Check the current rules of the commission or promotion for your event before you buy.
What size MMA gloves do I need?
Measure your hand, then read the size chart of the glove you want to buy. There is no single MMA size standard, and brands even measure in different ways:
| Size | Hayabusa 4 oz glove: hand circumference | Fairtex MMA gloves: knuckle width |
|---|---|---|
| S | 6.5–7.0 in (16.5–17.8 cm) | 3–3.3 in |
| M | 7.0–7.5 in (17.8–19.0 cm) | 3.5–3.8 in |
| L | 7.5–8.5 in (19.0–21.6 cm) | 3.8–4 in |
| XL | 8.5 in and up (21.6 cm and up) | 4 in and up |
Sources: Hayabusa and Fairtex size guides, as published by Made4Fighters (see Sources).
How do I measure my hand? Run a soft tape around your hand at the knuckles, with the thumb left out (Hayabusa chart). Hayabusa says to keep the tape level and the hand relaxed and open. Fairtex measures straight across the knuckles instead, so check which method your chart uses.
What if I'm between sizes? The guides disagree. The Fairtex guide says to size up. The Hayabusa chart says to size up for a 7 oz hybrid sparring glove and size down for a 4 oz competition glove.
How should MMA gloves fit?
An MMA glove should feel snug but never crushing across the knuckles (Fairtex size guide). Budo Online says the open fingers should let you grapple naturally, without restriction.
- Measure with your wraps on. If you train in hand wraps, the Hayabusa chart says to measure with them on.
- Check the wrist strap. Budo Online says a secure wrist strap reduces injury risk when striking, and suggests wide hook-and-loop straps or wrap-around designs.
- Breaking in won't fix the wrong size. Fairtex says a glove that does not fit cannot be broken in to fit, only broken down. Fairtex wrote this about boxing gloves; we found no MMA-specific source.
In professional bouts, fit can be a rule too: New Mexico's code says the gloves must fit the fighter's hands.
Why do MMA gloves have an open palm and open fingers?
So you can grab, clinch and grapple while still striking. Budo Online says MMA gloves are open-fingered to allow "grappling, clinch work and ground-and-pound," and that an open palm "allows for clinch work and takedowns." Ontario's rules require the open palm, open fingers and open thumb for professional bouts.
Should I buy leather or PU MMA gloves?
Leather is generally considered more durable, but real lifespan depends on use and care. Budo Online describes genuine leather as "more durable" and PU as "more affordable and easier to clean." Most of the material evidence comes from glove brands writing about boxing gloves, not from independent tests.
Compare both in leather vs synthetic boxing gloves, and see glove leather types for leather grades.
Can I use MMA gloves for boxing?
Not for boxing bouts or for boxing-style sparring. MMA gloves are much lighter: USA Boxing permits only 10, 12 or 16 oz gloves, while MMA gloves sit at 4–8 oz. If you mainly box, read how to choose boxing gloves.
